Australia are staring down the barrel of a humiliating defeat in India after losing seven early wickets in their desperate attempt to get back in the game.

India were finally skittled for 400 runs on Saturday morning, holding a 223-run advantage over the tourists after their poor first innings total.

But Australia’s heavy-hitters did little to put a dent in that deficit, with David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne throwing away their wickets for a pittance, before Mathew Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Alex Carey followed.

Steve Smith remains at the crease, but even with his undeniable talent he’s got a massive hill to climb.

The Aussies are playing the first of a four-Test series in India.
