Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had a somewhat flippant response when asked about a second reckless driving charge faced by his team’s second year defensive end Sam Williams.
Williams was arrested after getting caught speeding and possessing marijuana – his second speeding charge in as many years.
‘First of all, I’m saying that he is – which is more often the case than not, this sounds a little hollow – but he does and is maturing,’ Jones told reporters after the news broke yesterday.
Then, Jones decided to further clarify his believe in Williams’ maturity by pointing out he wasn’t going as fast this time as when he was last year.
‘What was he going, 66 [mph]?,’ Jones asked. When a reporter tried clarifying which speeding incident the owner was referring to, Jones replied ‘No this year. So he’s 34mph less this year than he was last year. 98[mph] to 66, so it’s an improvement.’
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says defensive end Sam Williams is showing ‘maturity’ by speeding not nearly as bad as he did last year, saying, ‘he’s [speeding] 34mph less this year’
Williams was arrested Sunday night in Frisco and charged with marijuana possession
Williams has played 15 games since being taken 56th overall in the 2022 Draft from Ole Miss
The Star-Telegram reported that the Cowboys were aware of the incident, which came a day after he played in the 22-14 preseason loss vs. Seattle.
Per Frisco police, possession of marijuana is a low-level state felony charge, while unlawful carrying of a weapon is simply a misdemeanor charge.
It seems to have not affected Williams’ preparation for the season. He was back with the Cowboys as of Tuesday.
An arrest warrant was issued for Williams in January for a misdemeanor reckless driving charge stemming from his late-December crash in the Dallas suburb, Plano.
Nobody was hurt in the collision, although Williams and the 71-year-old driver of another vehicle were both taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
The 23-year-old Williams is a pass-rushing specialist who rotates in at defensive end for the Cowboys on passing downs.
The Mobile, Alabama native began his college career at Northeast Mississippi Community College in 2017 and 2018 before transferring to Ole Miss for his final three college seasons.
The linebacker/defensive end recorded 12.5 sacks for the Rebels in 2021 before being drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of that year’s NFL Draft.
The sophomore defensive end was involved in a car accident in Plano, TX. in late December
His black Corvette was completely wrecked but he walked away from incident unscathed
Despite being highly-touted coming out of Oxford, MS., background issues were a concern among NFL teams, but not for Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones.
Williams was charged with sexual battery in 2020 but charges were ultimately dropped months later.
‘I’m confident that we know about the young man coming in here, that we’ve covered the ground and we’ve got it all out there,’ Jones said after picking Williams on draft night in 2021.
‘After having seen it all out there, we drafted Sam, and I’m confident we got everything.’
