England hold the edge over New Zealand in the first Test after bowling the Kiwis out for 306 in their first innings.
Resuming day two on 37-3 in reply to England’s 325-9 declared, New Zealand looked set to concede a significant first innings lead to the visitors, but Tom Blundell starred with the bat by hitting 138 to ensure that his side got to within 19 of England’s total.
Ollie Robinson was the pick of England’s bowlers as he finished with 4-54, while James Anderson took three wickets as he and Stuart Broad became just the second pair in Test history to take 1000 wickets while playing together.
England continued the positive approach with the bat that has served them well under Ben Stokes as they started their second innings under the lights, but lost openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley before the close of play.
England ended the day on 79-2, giving them a lead of 98.
