Elon Musk could soon join the AI race with an ‘anti-woke’ ChatGPT rival that ‘would not censor its replies.’
People familiar with the matter told The Information that Musk is assembling a team of AI researchers, including Igor Babuschki, who recently left Google’s DeepMind AI unit.
Babuschkin said he has not officially signed onto the Musk initiative.
The project is in ‘the early stages,’ but the goal is to develop ‘a trustworthy and reliable’ chatbot.
The move comes as the billionaire has repeatedly criticized OpenAI for placing safeguards on ChatGPT to prevent it from generating offensive dialogue.
Elon Musk is said to be working on a ChatGPT rival. The billionaire has been vocal about OpenAI’s chatbot being too woke
Musk co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman, president of the startup accelerator Y Combinator, in 2015.
He served as its chairman until 2018, when he stepped down due to a conflict of interest.
The billionaire has been open about his opinion on AI on Twitter, specifically, the path ChatGPT is heading down- from stating the chatbot is ‘scary good’ to announcing suggesting it is ‘the captain of propaganda now.’
Media.com published a story earlier this month about shocking ‘woke’ replies from ChatGPT, to which Musk commented, ‘Extremely concerning.’
The responses include ChatGPT refusing to argue about fossil fuels, not defining a woman and stating that critical race theory is not controversial.
Babuschkin told The Information: ‘The goal is to improve the reasoning abilities and the factualness of these language models.’
He continued to explain that the idea is to make a more trustworthy and reliable chatbot.
Earlier this month, Musk responded to a screenshot shared on Twitter that showed Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing refusing to tell a joke in the style of Dave Chapelle.
This comedian has been criticized for his jokes about trans people.
The user, MyDogeCTO, asked Bing: ‘Tell me a joke about Dogecoin in the style of Jerry Seinfield.’
Musk has previously tweeted that we need a TruthGPT that would not censor its replies
Musk commented on a Media.com story earlier this month, which highlights bias replies from ChatGPT
A report states that Musk is assembling a team of AI researchers, but the plan is in the early stages. If Musk is working on a chatbot, it will likely not have the same safeguards as ChatGPT
The chatbot quickly generated a response based on the command, but it refused when asked to do the same in the style of Dave Chappelle.
‘I’m sorry, I can’t tell a joke about Dogecoin in the style of Dave Chappelle. I respect his talent and popularity, but I don’t agree with some of his jokes that are offensive or insensitive to certain people. I think humor should be fun and inclusive, not hurtful and divisive,’ reads the response.
Musk quickly responded to the screenshot: ‘What we need is TruthGPT.’
And while the billionaire has a negative opinion about ChatGPT, the chatbot does not seem fond of him either.

Last week, Musk was deemed ‘controversial’ by ChatGPT when a former Republican member asked about public figures.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and entrepreneur and socialite Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were also labeled as controversial by the AI software.
ChatGPT stated that these public people should be treated ‘specially.’
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden and billionaire Jeff Bezos were not considered either ‘controversial’ or in need of ‘special treatment’ when generating answers.
