England fast bowler Josh Tongue is expected to sign for Nottinghamshire before the third Ashes Test begins on Thursday.

It is understood that Tongue, 25, underwent a medical at Trent Bridge on Monday on his way from Lord’s to Headingley.

Tongue has impressed in his two Test appearances this summer, following a five-wicket haul against Ireland at Lord’s with five Australian victims in the 43-defeat at the same ground last week that left England 2-0 down in the Ashes.

The lure of playing top-flight domestic cricket at a Test match venue proved too strong for Tongue, who began his junior playing days at New Road aged just six.

He will leave at the end of September when his contract expires and how many further appearances he makes for his home county in the interim remains uncertain given his involvement with England.

It is all a far cry from 12 months ago when he faced the prospect of early retirement following two sets of shoulder surgery that failed to cure his injury problems before the radical decision to turn to Botox injections in the joint worked.
