Jones has brought in Croatian international Mislav Orsic from Dinamo Zagreb and 20-year-old midfielder Carlos Alcaraz from Racing Club.
Saints are now hoping to add Hjulmand to their squad but it’s understood Lecce are not keen to sell the 23-year-old – whose contract runs until 2024.
Hjulmand has featured 16 times for Lecce in Serie A this season – with the midfielder picking up three assists.
Having played for Denmark’s youth sides, he was called up to the senior squad for the Nations League last summer but remained an unused substitute. Hjulmand did not make Denmark’s World Cup squad.
