The world’s biggest record label has set out plans to cash in on artificial intelligence as fears mount over its impact on artists.

Universal Music, which has pop stars such as Beyonce and Taylor Swift on its books, said it will explore the role of AI.

The rise of generative AI has raised alarm bells for labels because it could be used to mimic voices, melodies and lyrics without consent.

This can then be used to create fake versions of songs – thereby undercutting labels and their talent.

Earlier this year, Universal Music had an AI-produced song that mimicked rapper Drake and singer The Weeknd removed from streaming platforms.

Universal has said it will be working with Google-owned YouTube to launch a product that would ultimately monetise this threat.

Universal said it will be working with musicians to work out what this product could look like.

Sir Lucian Grainge, Universal Music chairman and chief executive, said: ‘I believe AI will amplify human imagination and enrich musical creativity.’
